Victoria School - Specialist Arts College

This project comprised of the renovation of a 'standalone' building on the site of Victoria School in Northfield to create a Centre for students with PMLD (permanent mental learning disabilities) between the ages of 19 and 25.

This included new entrance with canopy, new windows, re-felted roof with the installation of large roof lights to aid natural light, widening and installation of new doors, floor coverings, a high content of M & E with substantial alterations to the electricity and heating systems.   A new reception area, kitchen, staff meeting rooms and kitchenettes, common room / hub and sensory room were created along with the 2 classrooms / living skills areas.  These areas were then second fixed with fitted cupboards and shelving plus hoists and rise and fall specialist sinks in the welfare areas.  The entire building was re-plastered and decorated in visually stimulating colours.

In addition to this we added a new single storey extension to house an additional classroom with adjoining corridor to the above which will be utilised to store and charge the children's motorised wheelchairs.  In addition to this, a new gabion basket retaining wall was constructed and externally a new car parking area was created, with soft and hard landscaping.

Although during the build, this building was not occupied, the construction works were undertaken in close proximity to the main school therefore a strict traffic management plan was adhered to with constant communication with School staff, parents and pupils in order for the school to function normally with health and safety being of paramount importance.
